Manali – Zanskar – Leh Expedition
Itinerary
Day byday.
Begin in the lush valley of Manali — pine forests, the roar of the Beas, and old Manali's wooden temples and quiet lanes. Gear check, team introduction, and a final comfortable night before the road north begins.
Drive north through Rohtang or the tunnel into Lahaul — the first dramatic landscape shift of the journey. The green gives way to brown and the sky gets wider. Arrive at Jispa, a small camp settlement on the Bhaga River. The altitude is already making itself known.
A visit to Gonbo Rangjon — a remote monastery perched dramatically above a river gorge, rarely visited and entirely authentic. Short hike to the site. Time to sit with the monks. Drive onward into increasingly remote terrain.
One of the most extraordinary monasteries in the Himalayas — built into the face of a cliff around a natural cave, accessible only on foot. A half-day hike in to reach it. Inside: monks who have lived here for centuries by the same rhythms. A place that makes the word 'remote' feel insufficient. Camp near Phugtal. Night in complete silence.
Arrive in Padum — the main town of Zanskar, a wide valley ringed by spectacular peaks. Two days here: a hidden monastery that your guide has permission to visit privately, a popular gompa with active monastic life, and a village walk that shows you how Zanskari families actually live. The contrast between green Manali and this high desert valley is complete. Both are beautiful. Both are real.
Drive north through the Suru Valley — broader, gentler, and in summer, surprisingly green for this altitude. Overnight in Suru. The Nun-Kun massif visible to the south on a clear day.
Arrive at Lamayuru and the landscape changes again — pale eroded rock formations, a monastery sitting above it all like it was placed by hand. A long afternoon visit. Your local monastery guide explains what most visitors walk past without understanding.
The final drive down to Leh along the Indus River — prayer wheels, whitewashed chortens, the city appearing in the valley. Check in, rest, and let the journey settle.
A free day in Leh to explore the old town, palace, and local market at your own pace. Optional half-day excursion to Pangong Lake or Tso Moriri for those who want one last great landscape.
Last morning in Leh. The journey has taken you from green valley to cold desert, from roadside to cliffside monastery, from tourist town to places that have no name on most maps. Fly out. Both landscapes — the green and the barren — stay with you.

Your guide
Personally ledby Kavita.
Born in Haridwar, raised between the Ganges and her grandmother's hill house. Trained as a trek leader, then stepped away from agency tourism in 2019 to build something smaller, slower, more honest. The Mountain Child became real in 2021.
She knows every trail, every village elder, every hidden spot. But more importantly, she knows when to push you forward and when to let the mountains do the teaching.

I travel with The Mountain Child for seven years every year. I love the expertise, the local community Kavita makes us part of, the spiritual side where she guides us, her happiness in showing us the beautiful Indian nature, and the higher meaning she gives every step.
